The Player standing next to a Corrupted Rift

Corrupted Rifts are portals found randomly in the The Clocktower. Upon interacting with them you get sent into an alternate version of the current Area, leaving you in the current Room you were in before entering the Rift. This alternate version causes all enemies to be Cursed, this includes the Boss. It also adds a darkish-purple tint to the screen. These effects only stop when you enter the Metro.

List of Effects

  • All enemies become cursed, making them more threatening, but drop twice as many souls
  • The area's Boss is cursed, making it a far more dangerous foe, but allows it to drop a bonus relic on defeat
  • All chests become Curse Chests
  • All shops become Cursed Merchants
  • The Sacrifice Room Statue is replaced by a Cursed statue, inflicting up to three curses instead of taking hearts to receive high quality relics
  • No other Rifts can be encountered while a Corrupted Rift is active
  • The rift will have the "Corrupted" music track play, overriding default music for the area

Finding Rifts

Corrupted Rifts are dropped by enemies when the chance is successfully rolled, indicated by a purple visual and a crackling sound accompanying an afflicted enemy. Once the room is cleared, the Rift may be entered or ignored. This chance comes down to luck, but there are a few ways to find Corrupted Rifts, and ways to make them more likely to appear.

  • The Pocket Rift relic allows Corrupted Rifts to occasionally appear at the beginning of an area.
  • Pocket Rift also has a hidden mechanic that guarantees a Corrupted Rift in the first area after the relic is collected!
  • Entering a Golden Rift means you will NOT find a Corrupted Rift for the remainder of the area, as you can't swap from Rift to Rift.
  • Rifts will NOT appear in areas that do not use alliteration in their names!
