Enigma

Enigma is the first boss found at the end of the Ticking Tower Top. Defeating Enigma progresses the fight to Acceptance. Note that Enigma must be defeated without taking damage alongside Acceptance for Acceptance's Memento to drop.

Behavior.

Enigma can teleport, similarly to some other Bosses. This is telegraphed by a blue silhouette appearing at the target area for the teleport. Like all Bosses, Enigma cannot be fully halted by Freeze.

Enigma has 5 attacks:

  • They spawn two lines of normal sized bullets that shoot out followed by some larger bullets that break into normal bullets
  • They shoot four rows of five bullets at the player
  • They point both of their hands and spin them in a clock. Each Rotation shoots out bullets where he points his hands
  • They fly from side to side dropping bullets randomly, as if juggling.
  • At half health, Enigma gains one more attack, and does this immediately upon reaching the threshold. They spawn two damaging chains that meet at some point, usually around the middle of the arena. These chains stay until either the attack is used again or enough time passes. The chains can be dashed through.

When defeated, a cutscene will play, and the Boss switches over to Acceptance.

Dialog

Enigma is unique as it is one of the only bosses that talk. This dialog is only seen once on a save file upon reaching the Boss room for the first time

"You shouldn't have come, little one... but you knew that already, didn't you?" "Still, if you knew the truth, then why make the climb?" "I can still feel that outrage, the way my heart burned with furious agony, every time I stepped off that Metro." "again" "and again" "and AGAIN" "Not that it matters. We're cut from stubborn cloth, you and I. There is no convincing either of us, is there? Once we set our mind to a task..." "No matter." "You will learn, just as I have, that nothing in this cycle of death and rebirth ever ends... " "Not for me... Not for you... Not for us." "You're just as stubborn as I ever was. I can see the defiance in your eyes." "What makes you think you're the one to break the cycle?" "You're not special." "Give up." "..." "Whether you want to admit it or not, you're me, and this is the part that must always come next." "..." "Fine, if words won't change your mind... Let bravery be your downfall."

Enigma also has dialog a second time if the player dies to Enigma before getting to Acceptance.

"Monologues bore me." "Especially when I'm forced to repeat them over and over again..." "It is time for this journey of yours to end!"
